What is an engine cooling system and how does it work?
Engine cooling systems with water coolers generally all work according to the same principle. A liquid circulates in the system, which is cooled by the airstream and thus reduces the temperature of the engine. The big advantage: the water pump ensures that the coolant flows through the cooling system at the highest possible speed. It is driven by the crankshaft via a V-belt.
Structure of the water cooling system
In water-cooled engines, the cylinders and cylinder head are double-walled. There is water or coolant between the walls. The fan, radiator and water pump are the most important components of the water cooling system.
Fan
The function of the fan is based on the transmission of force through fluid in the fan clutch coupling. Viscous silicone oil is used as the transfer fluid. The fan is driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft or by gears.
Copper
Copper systems have the edge in terms of thermal conductivity and are more resistant to corrosion.
Thermostat
A thermostat is used in cooling water-cooled engines to avoid temperature fluctuations as far as possible. It has the important task of keeping the engine at as constant an operating temperature as possible.
Flat lamella core
Flat and oval tubes are used here. They are arranged in a checkerboard pattern and run through cross plates that serve to increase the heat-spreading surface.
Winding lamella core
Here, the tubes are arranged in rows. Grooved fins run between them, promoting the air flow that passes through the cooling grille.
How do you recognize a defect and what are the causes?
As a rule, the truck or trailer indicates a fault in the engine cooling system. In addition, the specific smell of antifreeze may occur in the driver’s cab. In both cases, a workshop should be visited immediately to prevent further damage caused by the leaking fluid and to have a replacement part fitted as quickly as possible.
Typical causes of a defect in the engine cooling system:

- Blockage and thus interrupted circulation due to deposits
