German Engineering for repairs in line with current valueAir suspension systems offer a number of advantages that are difficult to achieve with conventional springs. This includes, for example, the option of lowering buses on one side to make it easier for passengers to get on and off. The air suspension is also able to adapt automatically to the respective load condition with the aid of mechanically or electronically controlled valves. Thanks to continuous level control, the distance between the road and the vehicle body remains constant, which is why headlights do not need to be manually readjusted.
Optimum cooperation between bellows and level sensor
A perfect duo: with air suspension, the bellows (air spring) and the level sensor work together to keep the vehicle at a certain height. Regardless of the load or road conditions, they ensure a constant level of vehicle height. Here’s how they usually work together:
The airspring bellow:
- The airspring bellow is a flexible rubber part that is filled with air.
- It is often located between the vehicle frame and the axle
- The airspring bellow stabilise the vehicle level by allowing air to enter or exit the airspring bellow.
- The amount of air in the airspring bellow determines the height of the vehicle.
The level sensor:
- The level sensor measures the height of the vehicle above the ground.
- It sends information to the air suspension system to signal whether the vehicle is too high or too low:
- Based on the level sensor measurements, the air suspension system automatically adjusts the pressure in the airspring bellow to maintain the desired height.
Low expenditure thanks to less abrasion
A suspension is always exposed to considerable loads. With a steel suspension, the resilient steel has to take on this task – and it is no surprise that it reaches the end of its strength at some point. In an air suspension system, the pressurised bellow is the load-bearing element. And with proper maintenance, the mechanical wear of the individual components of an air spring can be less than with steel springs – which ultimately leads to reduced costs and lower expenses for the maintenance and repair of the individual components. With air suspension, it is therefore particularly important to regularly check and maintain the system and its individual components such as the air bag (rolling lobe or bellows), the rolling piston, the cone or the crimped plat.
